Stages of Male Pattern Hair Loss (Hamilton-Norwood Scale)
Male pattern Hairloss or baldness typically follows a predictable pattern, and the Hamilton-Norwood scale is the most widely used classification system to measure the progression of hair loss. The scale ranges from Stage I to Stage VII, each representing a different degree of hair thinning or balding:
Type I
- Minimal Hair Loss
- Slight thinning around the sides and front of the scalp.
Type II
- Early Recession
- Hairline begins to recede at both sides (temples) with thinning in the frontal region.
Type III
- Deeper Recession
- Hair loss becomes more pronounced, with symmetrical receding at the hairline, especially at the temples.
Type IV
- Frontal and Crown Thinning
- Receding hairline continues to move backward, and there is significant hair loss in the crown area.
Type V
- Extensive Hair Loss
- Hair loss in the front, temporal, and vertex regions (crown) becomes more severe, with only a thin bridge of hair between the front and the crown.
Type VI
- Bridge Disappearance
- The bridge of hair connecting the front and vertex disappears, leaving an open bald area extending from the front to the crown.
Type VII
- Severe Baldness
- The most advanced stage, with a bald appearance covering most of the scalp, leaving only a horseshoe-shaped strip of hair along the sides and back of the head.
Male pattern baldness can start as early as a man’s twenties and progressively worsen with age. Recognizing the stage of hair loss can help in determining the most appropriate treatment option, whether it’s medications, PRP therapy, or a hair transplant. At Infinity Aesthetics Clinic, we specialize in customized treatments for every stage of hair loss.
